Finding Flatstone street was rather easy. Luke pointed at a sing on the wall which said 'Flatstone street'.
" Looks like we found it, Professor! " he said and smiled. He didn't seem too nervous, although we were about to meet a person who claimed to be his future self, just up the road.
I was lost in my thoughts. I tried to make sense out of all the things we had seen today, but it was impossible. I still wasn't fully convinced we really were in the London of the future. There were too many things that didn't seem quite right. But I was sure that I would have many of my questions answered when we would enter the Gilded 7 Casino.
I saw him coming. It had to be him. That top hat
I had given it to him ten years ago. It was the same hat, no doubt about it. My heart started to pound loudly.
I was too far to see his face clearly, but I saw he had changed. There was something different about the way he walked and his movements, though I still was able to recognise they were his. Clearly ten years had passed since I last met him
As he was coming closer, I noticed a boy next to him. The boy had a blue sweater and a blue cap, so he had to be Luke. Seeing them walking there together made me smile, but only on the inside.
I put on my white hat and started walking.
I looked around. There was nothing unordinary to be seen. People were walking and chattering and I smelled something delicious being cooked. Nothing unordinary
I couldn't have been more wrong, because suddenly I saw something that made me instantly stop walking. The whole world started blur around me, and my heart jumped to my throat.
I saw Claire walking straight towards me. She was wearing a white hat which made it hard to see her face clearly, but I would have recognised her everywhere.
Or would I? She walked past me, not even giving me a glance. I couldn't help but to turn around as she walked away and turned around the corner. All the memories came flooding back.
No, there was no way that woman had been Claire. It was so absurd thought that it made me reproach myself.
" Huh? Professor? "
I turned around again and saw Luke looking at me concernedly. His look made me come back to my senses and the world around me came back to focus.
I realised that there were more important things to concentrate on than some stranger who just happened to look like Claire. After all, there was no way, simply no way it was her, no matter what I would have wanted to believe. Not after that day.
Still I couldn't forget her. This stranger, a replica of my one true love...
